The crawling eye is the problem. It was before Servo was Servo, another guy does the voice. I don’t know his name, but he is not good. His deep voice, and poor delivery make it clear that he had to go.
If you are a fan, I suppose it’s worth buying to complete the collection. But, it’s not worthy of the money. I am an MST3K lover from waaay back, but I am not letting my loyalty get in the way of this review. Every fan who put down 4 or 5 stars is not being honest.
Individual Movie Ratings:
- Crawling Eye – 2 stars
- The Beatniks – 4 Stars
- The Waters of Dr. Z – 3 Stars
- The Final Sacrific – 3 Stars
The mini posters are cool though.

Final Sacrifice is one of my favorite episodes. I’ve been waiting a long time for it to be released on DVD, and now that it is, I’m probably not going to buy it, because of the episodes it’s boxed with. The Blood Waters of Dr. Z is okay, but not exactly one of their best. The Crawling Eye is one of the very early episodes back when Josh Weinstein played Dr. Erhardt and voiced Tom Servo. I’m getting sick of Shout Factory including one of these in every box, because the show hadn’t really gotten funny yet. The Beatniks I haven’t seen. Maybe it’s great and makes up for The Crawling Eye and Dr. Z, but I’m not counting on it.

As far as DVD box sets go, this is surely one of them. While others might choose to criticise it’s uniformity in shape and let’s say adherence to broadcast TV “standards” as a flaw. I instead appreciate the complexity of these “flaws” as they are a perfect fit for my off brand DVD player.
This DVD Box set of Mystery Science Theater may rock your world, or not.
It’s just a TV show don’t worry about all that science stuff.
It’s up to you.
Sit back, enjoy the show.
It’s Mystery Science Theater 3000.

I admit I haven’t watched all the movies in this pack, but I have watched the two early episodes and I gotta say I wish I hadn’t bought this set. The early episodes are hard to watch because they were still experimenting with the format and the voices for Crow and Servo. Crow and Servo’s voices are so different and so distracting that it’s hard to listen. The format isn’t as lively either – very contrived, not easy-going and super funny like the later episodes.
I have at least 6 MST3K DVD box sets and I’ve been a HUGE fan since the show was on Comedy Central and I used to watch with my family when I still lived at home. So I’m not bagging on the series – just this box set – it sucks – don’t buy it!
As a side note…when I purchased this set, I also purchased a couple of “Shorts-Only” Rifftrax DVDs (featuring Mike and the guys who play Servo and Crow) and those were HILARIOUS! I brought the Rifftrax to my family’s Easter party and everyone, from kids to grandparents, were laughing hard!

I bought this as a present for my husband and he hasn’t stopped talking about it. Blood Waters of Dr. Z and the Final Sacrifice were his favorite. He laughed until he cried.
