Description
Jesse Stone is back! When his friend and fellow cop is shot during a visit to Boston, small town police chief Jesse Stone (Tom Selleck) risks his life and career to solve the crime while also investigating the disappearance of a missing child in this exciting fifth installment in the popular Jesse Stone movies based on the best-selling books by Robert B. Parker.Amazon.com
Tom Selleck returns to the role of Jesse Stone, the troubled but uncompromising police chief of Paradise, Massachusetts in Jesse Stone: Thin Ice. The fifth made-for-television movie in the Stone series, and the first not directly adapted from a specific novel by Robert B. Parker, the engrossing Thin Ice is an apt title for a story that finds a pair of investigations and Stone’s relationship with Paradise’s town council looking perilous. Wounded during a murderous attempt on Captain Healy (Stephen McHattie) of the Massachusetts State Police, Stone sets out to find the would-be killer against the wishes of Internal Affairs, the Paradise council, and Healy himself. Meanwhile, a woman (Camryn Manheim) whose newborn baby was stolen from her and presumed dead years ago appeals for help from a skeptical Stone. The chief’s usual problems with alcohol and the breakup of his marriage continue to haunt him, too. But none of that lessens Stone’s determination to follow his own moral code as he takes on his superiors’ shady ethics, a would-be killer, and a possible kidnapper.

Selleck, the show’s co-writer and executive producer, is much older than Parker’s original character. But he certainly captures the soul and rhythms of the quintessential Parker hero, and brings a fitting, gruff decency to the role. Kathy Baker is very good as one of the two officers under Stone’s command (Kohl Sudduth is quirky, good fun as the other cop). William Devane is a grizzled cipher as Stone’s chain-smoking shrink, and Leslie Hope provides a film noir edge as Stone’s cynical lover, a cop with the rather improbable name of Sidney Greenstreet. –Tom Keogh

I am a hugh fan of Robert Parker’s books ! I normally enjoy his style of writing and have read practically everything he has ever written. However Thin Ice is a distinctly poor effort … perhaps writing for TV corrupts everyone ! I would definitely recommend watching this film first on TV to see whether you think it’s worth buying – for me, I wouldn’t spend the money.

Dissapointed with this fifth in a series. Tom Selleck as usual was, witty, and I watched it all anyway. However, did not like the ending where he was fired. If you like Tom Selleck, you will like this one, be prepared for a little bit of a dull movie.

They don’t even deserve one star! They SHAFTED me! I never recieved my DVD and they wouldn’t reply to any of the 4 e-mails I sent them. I eventually had to file a claim and Amazon investigated them & refunded my money. Amazon is GREAT! Good Books Quick ISN’T!! I would never order from them again. I guess high ratings don’t really mean anything!

All five of the ‘Jesse Stone’ series are formulaic movies about a morose, veteran city cop seemingly incapable of coming to terms with an uncompromising temperament that drove away his ex-wife and dispels the goodwill of those on the town council with power over his last job as a small town police chief. So we watch because he brings the hammer of big city detective career expertise down on small town/ local city cases with a likable authenticity Nevertheless we depend on at least some plot momentum to hold our interest since the company of a melancholic, almost alcoholic is dreary. Unfortunately ‘Thin Ice’ lacks even the centrifugal force of more than three characters in his local police force and there is no main plot, just one and a half sub-plots so it never gets off the ground. By contrast ‘Death in Paradise’, ‘Night Passage’ and ‘Stone Cold’ were enjoyable because they had main and sub plots and ‘Sea Change’ was nowhere near as weak as ‘Thin Ice’ which should never have even been released in my opinion.

    You know what?

I’ll just create this “in the clear.”

And I’ll state and write my prejudice up front:

Tom Selleck is one of the most UNDERappreciated actors in my generation.

All of these four DVDs are massively worthwhile, as I’m sure the fifth is.

    Look. Let’s be plain.

Either you like Tom Selleck our you don’t. But you wouldn’t be here if you didn’t appreciate his artistry. You wouldn’t be wasting time reading this. Got you.

I’m buying this DVD. Period. BECAUSE it features Tom Selleck.
